Nemesis 2017: Brendan Reichs Book Review

‘Noah and Min are from two completely separate walks of life but both, unbeknownst to each other, share one traumatising experience every other year on their birthdays. Each alternate birthday is plagued with a murderous man in a suit who stops at nothing until they are dead, then they just wake up. Alive and well in the middle of nowhere. For years their traumatic situations are put down to psychological issues but when the duo find out about each other and the fact that they have been lied to by everybody that they trust in their small town the plot begins to unravel.’

Nemesis is on paper the type of book that i love to read. Young Adult almost post apocalyptic and it was in that sense okay but for some reason the writing style just didn’t make me want to pick the book up. Although the switching between different characters worked well and I didn’t struggle with who’s who which can happen a lot of the time, the separation between characters just didn’t give you enough time of detail to really find the characters overly relatable. The world that it was set in didn’t seem that real, it felt like black mirror where everything’s the same but the characters are all just slightly off.

To give credit to the author towards the end of the book everything did pick up a lot and without spoiling everything, which is what i’m trying hard not to do in my reviews now, the events which occur made me want to go out and purchase the second book straight away. I got the impression the first book was to set the scene and the rest are all going to pick up the pace which is a risky move most of the time but if it works then it works. Fingers crossed the second book has the same level of enjoyability as the end of the last book.

All in all, I will be reading the sequel when I can either find it in the charity shop of buy a bulk second hand order off of Amazon, which really is the mark of a good book. I’ll give it a 3/5 stars. If anybody else has read any of the books then I’d love to hear what you think about it because I’m just not so sure.
